Blue House Dubbo demonstrates the latest in water efficiency

Residents have the chance to see the latest in water efficiency with Dubbo Regional Council’s (DRC) Blue House Dubbo set to open to the public.

The Blue House Dubbo is a fully-functioning interactive home in south-east Dubbo that includes water saving tips and design to show how easy it can be to be water-wise. It was developed as an extension of the Virtual Blue House concept, created by Smart Approved Water Mark, as a key aspect of Council’s Drought Media and Communication Strategy.

Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Councillor Ben Shields toured the Blue House on Friday, ahead of its opening to the public on Tuesday. He said people would be able to see just how easy and cost-effective it was to save water.

“We have experienced one of the worst droughts on record and that showed us that water is a valuable resource that we have to be more careful with,” Councillor Shields said.

“The Blue House Dubbo is a great concept that shows some of the ways that people can save water by making small changes or through updating old technology. There is something for everyone with kid’s activities throughout the home.”

Internal features of the Blue House Dubbo include water efficient toilets, showerheads and appliances and tips for reducing water usage in the kitchen, laundry and bathrooms. Outside, the lawns and plants have been chosen to be low-maintenance and innovative garden bed designs have been used to maximise watering efficiency.

Council’s Manager Water Supply and Sewerage Stephen Carter said the techniques used to save water at the Blue House could be utilised in any home.

“By being able to walk through the Blue House Dubbo rather than watching it on a screen, people can see firsthand just how simple some of the water-saving methods are,” Mr Carter said.

“The interactive displays and infographics help to explain where Dubbo’s water comes from, how it is used around the home and ways water usage can be reduced.”

Blue House Dubbo is located at 20 William Farrer Drive, Dubbo, and is open every Tuesday between 12pm and 2pm and the first Saturday of the month between 9am and 12pm.

During these hours, Council’s friendly staff will be able to explain the features and look at queries customers have about their water usage. Once smart meters have been installed and the accompanying MyDRCWater portal released, staff will be able to assist with any enquiries.

It is also available by appointment for educational guided tours by school and community groups. Bookings must be made in advance by calling 02 6801 4000.
