NT Farmers Association stands behind the NT Government’s proposed water reforms. The much-needed reforms will support the economic development of the Northern Territory through agriculture.
“The environmental lobby is selfishly trying to sabotage the water reform process for its own short term benefit. Their efforts to undermine farmer’s access to water threatens the viability of the industry and the growth of the Territory economy.” Mr Paul Burke said, CEO of NT Farmers Association.
‘With the recent attacks on water legislation, it is clear that the environmental lobby will sacrifice the economy at any cost. The water reforms will provide certainty to many small farmers that they can continue to operate their businesses in the NT.
All farmers but particularly our family farms, depend on efficient water regulations that fairly balance the interests of farming with the environment. The current water controller has done an admirable job of balancing water requirements to deliver fair water decisions. Unlike a minister, the water controller is independent of party politics and provides stability in a complex and highly emotive space. The water controller position is dedicated to understanding the intricacies of water in the Territory.
It seems that environmental lobbyists will not stop until they shut down farmer’s access to water. They forget that agriculture helps to sustain rural towns and makes a massive contribution to the Territory’s gross domestic product. If the water reforms are passed, it will assist the industry to continue to generate jobs and attract families to our regions.
The predominately southern funded environmental lobby should think about Territory jobs before criticizing reforms which will create job opportunities while respecting the environment.
NT Farmers are committed to advocating for sensible water regulations that are underpinned by science. Unlike environmental groups, we believe that Territorians prefer to deal with facts and will support fair water regulations.” Said Mr Burke.
