Mayor of the Dubbo region welcomes Kmart to the city

Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Councillor Ben Shields, is excited to receive confirmation from Target Australia, that its Dubbo-based store will be converted into a Kmart. The Wesfarmers group wrote directly to the Mayor to confirm the news, following a strategic review of the Target business.

“I have been advocating for a Kmart in Dubbo for many years, and it’s fantastic to hear that the Wesfarmers group has decided to transition its Target store to a Kmart store in October this year (2020).”

“I understand that it might be disappointing for some that we are losing our Target, but it’s great to know that it will be replaced with a store like Kmart.”

“We need to ensure that Dubbo is the country shopping capital. We need to have the best retailers in order to continue to attract customers from across Western NSW. Kmart will help us do that and keep people employed,” Councillor Shields said.

As outlined in a letter to the Mayor from Target’s Managing Director Marina Joanou, staff at the Dubbo store have been briefed on the plans and what it means for them, including Wesfarmers’ commitment that the team members in Target stores scheduled for conversion to a Kmart will be offered the opportunity to join the growing Kmart team.

“I’m incredibly relieved that Target will allow its employees the opportunity to swap over to the ever-growing Kmart, keeping them in jobs during this particularly turbulent time,” Councillor Shields said.

Target has assured the Mayor that its online services will remain operational, should people still wish to purchase from the store.

“I thank the Wesfarmers group for considering its position in regards to the future of its Target and Kmart stores. I know that this is an outcome the community will be pleased with,” Councillor Shields said.
