More than one third of motorists took up short-term registrations last year (2020), making it easier for Victorians to balance the family budget.
Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said more than 1.8 million Victorians are now paying their registration every three months or every six months, allowing them to pay less upfront and spread the cost of renewing their registration across the year.
The newer registration options are helping Victorians manage household bills and keep their cars on the road during the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
The scheme continues to be popular across Melbourne and regional Victoria, with the highest number of short-term registered vehicles in Craigieburn, Pakenham and Point Cook.
In regional Victoria, short term registration is most popular in Mildura, Shepparton and Warrnambool.
The scheme is also particularly popular with young Victorians, with 59 per cent of vehicles owned by drivers under 20 taking advantage of flexible registration options.
A three-month registration in metropolitan Melbourne costs $211.20, a six-month registration costs $419.90 and an annual registration fee costs $834.80.
Revenue from registration fees is used to help fund TAC insurance to assist people as they recover from crashes, as well as to fund vital road upgrades, which continue to keep people safe on roads across the state.
