Transport for NSW’s Safety Town characters Daisy and Sprocket have been brought to life, visiting Bathurst South Public School ahead of starting their very own regional roadshow.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the colourful characters would visit community events including the likes of school fairs, to help remind everyone of the importance of road safety.
“Children are our most vulnerable and inexperienced road users. Road safety education is a shared responsibility between home and school,” Mr Toole said.
“Last year (2019) we announced Daisy and Sprocket would leap from computer screens into real life, encouraging kids and families to make road safety an everyday topic of conversation.
“Our great mascots will help reinforce the messages like ‘hold an adult’s hand when you cross the road’ and ‘Stop!, Look!, Listen!, Think!’ every time you cross the road.”
Mr Toole said the Road Safety Education Program was just one of many programs funded by Transport for NSW to help keep children safe when out and about.
“We’ve tailored our safety program across the state to each school, installing a combination of signage, road markings and flashing lights to remind motorists to slow down when entering a school zone,” Mr Toole said.
“We’re also well advanced in rolling out our $18.5 million investment to deliver 300 new school crossing supervisors to schools that may not have been previously eligible.
“This includes 80 new supervisors identified last year (2019), 19 of which are at regional schools.”
The Safety Town website provides interactive activities for children that they can do in the classroom or with their family at home, as well as lesson plans for teachers of all year groups.
Daisy and Sprocket will make guest appearances at various community events to help reinforce key road safety messages to children their families.
