Boost for rural GP training

A new $751.3 million, five-year Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Grant agreement has been secured between the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) and the Australian Government, described by the RACGP as the largest and longest training agreement ever awarded to a medical college.

The RACGP says the agreement will help expand access to GPs nationwide, with 1,772 doctors joining the AGPT program in 2026, a nearly 19% increase on the 2025 cohort of 1,507.

Regional and remote communities are a key focus.

The 2026 intake includes 841 doctors on the rural training pathway who will spend all three years training in regional, rural or remote locations, and 293 doctors training as Rural Generalists with additional skills relevant to rural practice.
