Millions of people worldwide will see Margaret River’s famous surf conditions, picturesque vineyards and lush forests when the town hosts the Margaret River Pro event for 12 days from tomorrow (May 29 2019).
The event is part of the World Surf League’s Championship Tour and is supported by the State Government, through Tourism Western Australia.
The competition attracts the world’s top 34 professional men and top 17 professional women surfers, including current world champions Gabriel Medina and Stephanie Gilmore.
An opportunity to secure a guaranteed wildcard entry into the main draw will also be made available to one WA man and one WA woman through pre event trials.
Thousands of spectators are expected to travel to the region to watch the event, held at Margaret River Main Break with the added option of utilising backup locations of The Box and North Point if conditions are favourable.
The event will also be showcased through digital platforms and a global television broadcast with promotional material showcasing the South-West region as a desirable surf and tourism destination.
This coverage will include Western Australia’s key international tourism markets such as the United States of America, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and China.
In February 2019, the State Government successfully negotiated for the event to remain on the World Surf League Championship Tour until 2021, with the option to extend for a further year.
The State Government, through Tourism WA, has been a proud sponsor of the Margaret River Pro for more than 30 years.
