No more asbestos disposal at Lismore waste facility

Lismore City Council’s Waste and Resource Recovery Facility at Wyrallah Road is no longer able to accept any asbestos waste until further notice.

This includes all domestic (including household kits), commercial or any other waste containing asbestos. The facility’s current landfill cell has reached capacity faster than expected and Council is in the process of expanding and constructing a new landfill cell to cope with the growing needs of our community.

It is anticipated that the new cell will be operational before the end of 2019.

To locate an alternative location for asbestos disposal please refer to the NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website www.epa.nsw.gov.au – (Search: “facilities that accept household asbestos”) for a list of facilities licenced to accept asbestos waste in the North Coast region. The closest ones are at Casino, Kyogle, Grafton and Stotts Creek (Tweed Shire). Please note some facilities require notice and prior approval before delivery and/or acceptance.

Lismore City Council would like to remind the community that illegal dumping of asbestos waste is a serious EPA offence and heavy penalties apply. Should you require more information on asbestos laws, and requirements for handling and disposing of asbestos, please visit the EPA website.
