Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) was delighted to host the Japanese Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Mr Reiichiro Takahashi and his wife Mrs Masako Takahashi in Dubbo. The couple were also accompanied by, Colonel Yuki Kimura Defence Attaché and Mr Soichi Igari, Political Consul from the Consulate-General of Japan – Sydney.
His Excellency Mr Takahashi first stopped in at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and enjoyed an encounter with resident Koala Norm, followed by a guided tour of the zoo with Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s Director Mr Steve Hinks.
The group then arrived at the Shoyeon Japanese Gardens, for a guided tour by DRC Manager of Recreation and Open Space, Ian McAlister – wearing a traditional Kimono. The group then enjoyed a traditional Japanese winter tea ceremony, in the Tea House within the Shoyeon Gardens, served by tea master Anthony Brien from Urasenke Association Sydney.
Mayor of the Dubbo Region Councillor Ben Shields was delighted to have Mr Takahashi in Dubbo.
“I was extremely proud to welcome Mr Takahashi and guests to the Dubbo region. We have a strong relationship with both of our sister cities Minokamo and Toyama, so any opportunity we get to celebrate this bond with dignitaries such as Mr Takahashi is very exciting.
“I was particularly proud to hear Mr Takahashi’s praise of our Shoyeon Gardens and of the tea ceremony. He said it was one of the best he has had in Australia,” said Councillor Shields
Mr Takahashi and his guests enjoyed a dinner with the Mayor, Councillor Shields, DRC’s CEO Michael McMahon and DRC’s Director of Liveability, Skye Price (compliant with COVID-19 restrictions, meaning a maximum of 10 people) in honour of the visit.
DRC would like to acknowledge DRC’s Sister Cities Officer, Kylie Sutherland, for coordinating the itinerary and fostering a positive diplomatic relationship. After leaving the region, Mr Takahashi will attend a function at Cowra.
