Cr Kristy McBain leaves Council

Cr Kristy McBain has resigned from her position as Councillor for the Bega Valley Shire, but will continue to champion for the shire as federal Member for Eden-Monaro.

Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick thanked Ms McBain for her dedication to the Bega Valley over her eight years as a Councillor, including four years as Mayor.

“Ms McBain has worked tirelessly to support the community, and her leadership through the Tathra, Yankees Gap and Black Summer bushfires will not be forgotten,” Cr Fitzpatrick said.

“She has been a consistent, strong-minded and thoughtful presence in the Council chambers, always making decisions with the community’s best interests in mind.

“We wish her all the best in focusing on her important role as the federal Member for Eden-Monaro, and will continue to work closely with her in this capacity as we advocate strongly for our shire.”

Council’s General Manager, Leanne Barnes said it had been a pleasure to witness Ms McBain’s role as local representative, civic leader and inspiration to young women in and beyond the shire.

“Many of us have fantastic memories of Ms McBain making considered decisions for the community while attending Council meetings with babies Max and Jack in tow.

“Throughout her time with Council she has demonstrated that seeking a successful career while raising a family is not only achievable for young women, but it can also deliver insight and strength when it comes to making difficult decisions on behalf of the community.”

In announcing her resignation, Ms McBain thanked councillors and council staff for their dedication and support throughout her service.

“I want to thank the dedicated team at council that I have worked with. Dealing with a series of rolling natural disasters since 2016 has been particularly challenging,” Ms McBain said.

“We always put our community first and at times this was at the expense of Council’s operational and delivery plan and forgoing income to assist those most in need.”

In the current election cycle there is no requirement for Council to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy. Council will continue with seven Councillors.

Councillor McBain’s position will be filled following the 2021 Local Government Elections to be held later this year (2021).
