For the first time, Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) will host a Chalk Walk, encouraging the public to get out of the house and do something with their family and friends in a COVIDSafe way. The DREAM Festival organisers have passed the baton to DRC to arrange and deliver future events, and as a way of paying homage to the event, three-dimensional chalk drawings will be scattered across the region, where the public is invited to go on an adventure to find the artwork, and even get sketching their own!
“A few years ago, DREAM Festival had a very popular 3D chalk drawing outside the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre (DRTCC), and so we wanted to do something that pays tribute to DREAM Festival, but also indicates that DRC is ready to take a new direction with the popular event,” said Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Councillor Ben Shields.
As part of the Chalk Walk, which runs from 2 – 17 October, there will be various locations people can visit the chalk art, snap a picture and upload it to social media tagging @DubboRegionEvents to be featured.
The walk has been created to provide an engaging, new and COVIDSafe event for our community, where visitors and residents can participate in the Chalk Walk at any time.
“You’ll be able to find the chalk art right around the region, in places like the Church Street Rotunda, the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre, Western Plains Cultural Centre, the Adventure Playground and on Nanima Crescent, Wellington,” said Councillor Shields.
The artwork is being created by Zac Craig who is originally from Dubbo, alongside Anton Pulvirentui – both renowned 3D chalk artists.
In addition to the 3D chalk art pieces, there will be the Chalk & Cheese evening this Friday 2 October 2020 from 5-7pm, to kick-start the two-week event. The perfect way to have Friday night drinks, the public is invited to check out the 3D chalk art at the DRTCC, while enjoying a cheese box and a drink from the bar.
“There will be live music provided by Clinton Hoy and our platters, which are suitable for two people, will include cheese and biscuits. The event itself is free, but if you’d like to purchase a cheese box for $22, head to the DRTCC website,” said Manager Regional Events Kim Hague.
The event is capped at 60 people in order to comply with COVIDSafe restrictions, so registrations are essential to avoid disappointment, even if you don’t want a cheese box.
Finally, for the school holidays, get involved in your own neighbourhood Chalk Walk, with the Chalk Challenge! Add some fun and colour to your driveway and help create a masterpiece the whole street can enjoy. Using the hashtag #ChalkChallengeDRC, you can enter your work of art into Council’s competition for a chance to win art classes with local, well-known artist Jack Randall.
“Simply upload a picture of your entry to either a Facebook page or Instagram account. Be sure to add #ChalkChallengeDRC. You’ll need to take a picture of yourself with the drawing, and if you are under 18, don’t forget to get mum and dad’s permission to enter. The theme of the drawing must be “What does your community mean to you?” said Councillor Shields.
