2020 Dubbo Day Awards - nominations now open

Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Councillor Ben Shields is delighted to announce nominations for the 2020 Dubbo Day Awards are now open.

With a particularly trying and challenging year drawing to a close, Councillor Shields is encouraging everyone to nominate a deserving member of the community to be considered for the 2020 Dubbo Day Awards.

The awards are given to members of the community who volunteer their time to help enrich the lives of others, with the awards ceremony hosted annually to mark the anniversary of Dubbo’s gazettal as a village on 23 November 1849.

“I think there’s little doubt that the last few years have certainly challenged more than a few people across our region, the last year in particular being unlike anything most of us have ever lived through before,” said Councillor Shields. “Dubbo has a proud history of its people volunteering to help their community and Council is pleased to once again recognise those who — without hesitation or want of favour — so generously and freely give their time.”

“On the tail of a prolonged, punishing and devastating drought, through to tougher times for many due to economic pressures, including pressures brought on by COVID-19, it is no secret that without these selfless individuals, Dubbo would be a much poorer place,” said Councillor Shields. “We all know someone who makes a great contribution and deserves credit for it; and they’ll most likely be the person who least seeks any acknowledgement or praise for what they do for the community.”

Nominations will remain open until Wednesday, 11 November 2020 with the ceremony to take place on Monday 23 November at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre’s (DRTCC) Macquarie Auditorium.

With a maximum of 20 awards handed out each year, deserving recipients are meticulously selected by a committee of community members, all of whom are past recipients of a Dubbo Day Award, as well as the Mayor.

“It is so important that people get their nominations in soon so they can be considered by our selection committee,” said Councillor Shields. “I really want people to think about who they feel is most deserving of one of these prestigious community awards – don’t be afraid to nominate those you feel truly deserve to be recognised for their outstanding contributions to this great city.”

Nominations can be made via Council’s website, or printed off and returned to the Dubbo Regional Council Customer Experience Centres in Dubbo.
