NT Seniors Recognition Scheme values senior Territorians

Northern Territory residents who are 65 years or older are eligible to receive an annual payment of $500 to use for travel, electricity or water.

The payment is available to NT Seniors Recognition Scheme members and recognises the valuable contribution of senior Territorians.

Members who chose to use the payment for travel overseas, interstate or within the Northern Territory will receive vouchers. The vouchers can also be used to travel by vehicle or to bring a family member to the Territory for a visit.

Territory Families Chief Financial Officer, Kim Charles said the vouchers provide a boost to the local economy by supporting local businesses.

Territory Families has issued about 17,000 travel vouchers, to the value of $4.2 million since 1 July 2018.

Members of the NT Seniors Recognition Scheme who have a 2018-19 travel voucher are reminded to use them before they expire on 30 June 2019.

Unused travel vouchers can be transferred over to members’ water or electricity bill if they are not going to travel before they expire. This must be done by 31 May 2019. Contact the Scheme on 1800 777 704.

“It is important that members use their travel vouchers or transfer them to their electricity or water bill so they can make the most of their benefits, because they cannot be redeemed after 30 June 2019”, she said.

“Members who are booking their own travel and claiming a reimbursement afterwards, must book and travel by 30 June this year (2019). If members are booking through one of our Approved Vendors, they can travel anytime,” she said.
