Mildura Riverfront Powers Ahead

More people will soon be able to enjoy Mildura’s scenic Murray River with major building works to begin next month on the next stage of a popular waterfront precinct, backed by support from the Victorian Government.

Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Victoria Danielle Green visited the Mildura riverfront, with the Victorian Government investing $5.5 million in the second stage of the Powerhouse redevelopment through two grants from the Building Works package and the Regional Infrastructure Fund.

The project will create 34 jobs and includes upgrades to the existing Powerhouse building and the creation of a Village Square featuring an in-depth digital information platform, café, outdoor area, public amenities and carpark.

The designs were released for the second stage of the Powerhouse Precinct in September last year, which followed extensive community input.

The designs also include transforming the former Powerhouse basement space into a multi-use arts area, a kitchen to help cater for events, flexible indoor and outdoor event spaces and a large outdoor shade structure. The second stage of the Precinct will be built with new landscaping to match the rest of the redeveloped riverfront.

Stage one of the project was completed in 2017, and included an interactive splash park, outdoor gym equipment, public art sculptures and improved accessibility. Three million people have visited the Mildura riverfront since stage one’s completion.

The Building Works package is designed to provide immediate benefit to communities across Victoria through shovel-ready projects that will create jobs now and provide lasting benefits in response to economic challenges brought about by the pandemic, drought and bushfires.

The Regional Infrastructure Fund is part of the flagship Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund, with both programs key to the Government’s almost $30 billion investment across regional and rural Victoria since 2015.
