The Gillard Labor Government will deliver $1.2 million towards the upgrade of the Domain Tennis Centre, which has played host to the annual Moorilla Hobart International Event, a lead-up women's competition to the Australian Open since 1994.
The announcement was made by Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, with Labor Candidate for Denison, Jonathan Jackson.
"This investment will deliver a major boost to southern Tasmania's economy and will secure Hobart's place on the international sporting calendar," Anthony Albanese said.
"It will complete the Domain Tennis Centre renewal and is expected to support 29 jobs during construction, as well as three full time post-construction jobs.
"The Moorilla Hobart International brings thousands of competitors, umpires, officials, media and tourists from across Australia and around the world to Hobart every year."
Jonathan Jackson said the upgrades, expected to be completed by January next year, would help make sure that the prestigious international event remains at the Domain Tennis Centre for at least the next three years.
"This investment ensures Tasmania remains on the map for internationally renowned elite sporting events while providing much needed facilities for junior development," Jonathan Jackson said.
"The funding will provide a boost to Tasmanian sports and tourism and will support jobs in our local community."
Anthony Albanese said Federal Labor was proud to partner with the Tasmanian Government, which is contributing $3.5 million, and the Hobart City Council, to provide world-class sporting infrastructure for players, spectators and the Hobart community.
"This funding builds on our other investments in Hobart including $2.7 million for the Glenorchy Sculpture and Linkages Park," Anthony Albanese said.
The funding will fit out the new northern corporate stand, media room, multi-purpose room, amenities and storage area and provide shade structures and a new stadium entrance.
Funding for this project is already included in the budget, through the Infrastructure Employment Projects program.
